Basic Life Support

First Aid/Basic Life Support is one tool all persons both children and adults must have in-order to be able to react and possibly preserve life, prevent danger and promote recovery in an emergency. Thus making a fully qualified First Aider an essential asset for any team in an environment where medical emergencies could occur

This role requires the individuals to;

  • Stay calm, promptly assess the situation and prioritise their actions.
  • Understanding what to do and having the skills and knowledge to provide the correct support. 
  • Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;

First Aiders must understand & Recognise Casualties experiencing;

  • Bleeding or wounded (including catastrophic bleeding )
  • Heart Attack / Stroke (practical)
  • Suffering from shock (practical)
  • Suffering from choking (practical)
  • Fracture and Sprain/Strain (practical)
  • Suffering from an injury to bones, muscles or joints
  • Has sustained a head neck and spinal injury (practical)
  • Has been burned or scalded
  • Has an eye injury
  • Has been overcome by gas or fumes
  • May have been poisoned or exposed to a harmful substance

Each student must demonstrate that they are able to:

  • Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure);
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking; including practical
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding including catastrophic bleeding
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock;
  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters, insect stings and animal or human bites.
  • Use available first aid equipment, including the contents of a first aid box. 
  • Understand the duties of the first aider, employers and the legal framework
  • Maintain simple factual records on what they have done with regard to any treatment or management of an emergency
  • Recognise the importance of personal hygiene in first aid procedures.

The HSE strongly recommends that first aiders undertake annual refresher training.

Recertification training must be completed within three years.  The First Aider will have to re-sit the full 1 day (6 hour contact time) course when their certificate expires.

The Resuscitation Council recommends that Defibrillator skills be updated at least once a year and preferably more often.

To give learners the knowledge, skills and confidence to enable them to administer first aid in an emergency situation safely, promptly and effectively

To equip the First Aider with a wide range of skills and knowledge to administer the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

First Aid Course Outline

This onsite three days first aid at workplace training course covers:

1. Introduction to First Aid at Work

  • Overview of the course
  • Importance of first aid in the workplace
  • Legal and regulatory framework

2. The Law Relating to First Aid

  • Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations
  • Employer and employee responsibilities
  • First aid requirements in the workplace

3. Unconsciousness (Including Seizures)

  • Recognising signs of unconsciousness
  • How to safely manage an unconscious person
  • Seizure management and when to seek medical help

4. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Basic principles of CPR
  • Hands-only CPR vs. full CPR
  • Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • When and how to administer CPR

5. Choking, Shock, Wounds, and Bleeding

  • Identifying choking hazards and how to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre
  • Recognising and treating shock
  • How to treat different types of bleeding (minor, severe, internal)
  • Wound care and infection prevention

6. Minor Injuries

  • Treatment of cuts, bruises, and sprains
  • Managing minor burns and bites
  • Assessing and treating small injuries safely

7. Bone, Spinal, and Muscle/Joint Injuries

  • How to recognise fractures, dislocations, and sprains
  • Spinal injury first aid techniques
  • Immobilisation and proper handling of injured areas

8. Chest Injuries

  • Recognising chest trauma and its potential causes
  • Treating rib fractures, punctured lungs, and other chest injuries
  • When to seek emergency medical help

9. Burns and Scalds

  • Recognising the severity of burns and scalds
  • First aid treatment for different types of burns (heat, chemical, electrical)
  • How to prevent further injury and reduce pain

10. Eye Injuries

  • Identifying eye injuries (chemical burns, foreign bodies, blunt trauma)
  • Proper first aid for different types of eye injuries
  • When to seek medical attention

11. Poisoning

  • Recognising the signs of poisoning (ingestion, inhalation, skin absorption)
  • First aid treatment for poisoning (including common household substances)
  • How to handle an unconscious or breathing victim

12. Prophylactic Shock

  • Understanding prophylactic shock and its causes
  • Signs of shock and how to manage it
  • Preventative measures and treatment for shock victims

13. Major Head Injuries

  • Recognising the signs and symptoms of head injuries
  • How to safely handle suspected head injuries (including concussion)
  • Importance of monitoring and seeking immediate medical care

14. Stroke and Heart Attack

  • Recognising the signs of a stroke and heart attack
  • Immediate first aid actions for stroke victims
  • How to assist someone having a heart attack and when to call emergency services

15. Epilepsy, Asthma, and Diabetes

  • Understanding epilepsy and seizure management
  • First aid for asthma attacks (including use of inhalers)
  • How to recognise and treat diabetic emergencies (hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia)
